Catholic Action started in Malta through a small group of students on 5 April 1929, with the help of Father Danjel Callus. On the 19th of February 1930 the statute was officially approved by the Archbishop of that time. Since then, a number of groups have been opened in different Parishes. The aim of these groups was to take a more active role in conveying the message of the Church and to be of service to others. This small initiative has developed into one of the largest Catholic organizations we have in Malta today.
Over the years, the Maltese Catholic Action was the beginning of a number of social and spiritual projects and activities in Malta. During these 90+ years, Maltese Catholic Action has touched and changed the lives of many people. Today, Maltese Catholic Action is still strong with around 35 groups of young people aged between ten and thirty and more than 40 groups of adults around Malta and Gozo. The purpose is to accompany people in their lives, both personally and spiritually as well as socially, together with others – offering a Catholic formative pathway within a group. The organisation still focuses on service to others, through a number of ongoing projects, the most important project being the formation of members and leaders.
