The rite of beatification will take place on Saturday 16 December 2023 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Luján at 11am.
On 8 November 2023, the Holy Father Francis authorised the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the Decree concerning the miracle attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God Eduardo Francisco Pironio, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church; born in Nueve de Julio (Argentina) on 3 December 1920 and died in Rome (Italy) on 5 February 1998.
The International Forum of Catholic Action and Foundation Catholic Action School of Sanctity Pius XI welcome with joy and gratitude the forthcoming Beatification of the dear Venerable Servant of God Eduardo F. Pironio.
The last of 23 children, he was born into a very religious family of Friulian immigrants in Argentina.
Cardinal Eduardo was a generous, attentive and synodal pastor for Catholic Action Argentina and the International Forum of Catholic Action (FIAC).
From the beginning of his ministry, he has always accompanied Catholic Action, first as diocesan assistant of the Young Women of Catholic Action of the diocese of Mercedes Lujan, later becoming national assistant of AC Argentina.
In Rome since 1975, he has participated in many national Italian CA initiatives.
As President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (now the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life) from 1987 he encouraged and supported the creation and first steps of the International Forum of Catholic Action (IFCA), after the Synod on “Vocation and Mission of the Laity in the Church and in the World” (1987) and the Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles Laici (1988).
We recall his prayer to the Virgin of Lujan, written on the occasion of the FIAC Assembly in Buenos Aires in 1997, which he was unable to attend due to illness.
In his spiritual testament, he left us his embrace forever: “I loved Catholic Action very much!”
Magnificat!
I give thanks to God for having been able to expend my poor strength and talents in dedicating myself to dear lay people, whose friendship and witness have enriched me spiritually. I have loved Catholic Action very much.
If I have not done more, it is because I have not known how to do it. God has allowed me to work with the laity from the peasant simplicity of Mercedes (Argentina) to the Pontifical Council for the Laity.
